How to Layer Your Synced Skin Serum and Balm
A few drops. A layer of balm. A moment for you.
In this guide
Your guide to serum first, balm second, with links to both Synced Skin pairings.
Your Synced Skin pairing has two steps: a jojoba-based face serum, followed by its matching tallow balm. Here is the order, how the two product formats fit together, and how to choose the products for your routine.
The order: serum first, balm second
- Begin with serum. Apply a few drops to clean, damp skin, following the directions on your current bottle.
- Follow with balm. Apply the matching balm after the serum, following the directions on your jar.
- Store your products as directed. Check the current labels for storage guidance. If a direction is unclear, ask Synced Skin.
This order applies to both botanical pairings: Follicular / Ovulatory and Luteal / Menstrual.
What is the difference between the two steps?
The serum comes in a dropper bottle and uses jojoba oil as its base. The balm comes in a jar and contains tallow and jojoba oil. Both products within a pairing share its essential-oil blend.
You are layering two different product formats. For a closer introduction to the bottle and jar, read our face serum and balm guide.
Do you need all four products at once?
No. The collection contains two serum-and-balm pairings. For one application, choose the pairing you are using and follow its two steps. The Starter Kit lets you explore both blends without requiring you to layer all four formulas together.
You can choose by the ingredients and scent profile you prefer. There is no required calendar for switching between the two. The pairing comparison guide explains what is different about each blend.
Choose your serum and matching balm
Follicular / Ovulatory: herbal and citrus
This pairing contains clary sage, lemon, and lemongrass essential oils. Start with the Follicular / Ovulatory Serum, then follow with the matching Balm.
Luteal / Menstrual: woody and minty
This pairing contains frankincense, spearmint, and eucalyptus essential oils. Start with the Luteal / Menstrual Serum, then follow with the matching Balm.
Questions before you begin
Does the balm go before the serum?
For Synced Skin, serum comes first and balm follows. This is the order for these products; follow the directions for any other products you use.
How much should I use?
Use the directions on your current bottle and jar. The photograph shows the balm being spread on an arm; it is not a measurement of the amount to use on your face.
Do I need to buy the whole kit?
You can buy a serum and its matching balm separately, or choose the Starter Kit for both pairings. Mini and Full Size include the same four formulas in different amounts. See the kit size comparison for the exact volumes.
Where can I read the ingredients?
Open the Full ingredient list dropdown on each product page. All four formulas contain essential oils, and both balms contain animal-derived tallow. For a formula-specific question, contact Synced Skin before ordering.

Your next step
For one application, choose one serum-and-balm pairing. Apply the serum first, then the matching balm. You do not need to layer all four formulas.
- Read the directions on your current bottle and jar for the amount to use.
- Check both ingredient lists before starting a new pairing.
- Compare the two botanical blends if you are still choosing.
