Face Oil vs Balm: What Is the Difference?
In this guide
What is the difference between a face oil and a balm? Compare Synced Skin’s jojoba-based serums and tallow balms, the two-step order, ingredients and sizes.
Face oil and face balm can belong in the same routine, but they are not the same kind of product. In the Synced Skin collection, the face serum is a jojoba-based oil used first; the tallow-based balm follows as the second step. Which one you choose depends on the ingredients and directions for the specific formula—not on a universal rule about every oil or balm.
What is the difference between Synced Skin serum and balm?
Our face serums begin with golden jojoba oil. They are the bottle step: a few drops go onto clean, damp skin. Our face balms have a tallow base and come in jars. They are the finishing step in the Synced Skin pairing. Both formats also include a botanical essential-oil blend; the blend differs between the two pairings.
- 01 · Serum: jojoba-based face oil, used first.
- 02 · Balm: tallow-based jar formula, used after serum.
“Serum” describes a wide range of products across skincare. This explanation is about Synced Skin’s oil-based serums, not a claim that all serums have the same ingredients or layering order.
How do you layer face oil and balm?
Start with clean, damp skin. Apply a few drops of serum, following the directions on your current bottle. Follow with the balm from the same pairing. You do not need to apply all four Synced Skin products at once: the collection contains two serum-and-balm pairings.
For a visual overview, see How It Works. That guide owns the step-by-step routine; this article helps you compare the two product formats.
What are the two botanical pairings?
Follicular / Ovulatory pairs the jojoba-based face serum with its tallow balm. The listed botanical oils are clary sage, lemon and lemongrass.
Luteal / Menstrual pairs the face serum with its tallow balm. The listed botanical oils are frankincense, spearmint and eucalyptus.
The names express the collection’s cycle-inspired idea. They do not mean the products change hormones, treat a skin condition, or require you to identify a particular cycle phase to use them. Check the current ingredient list for the exact item you are considering—especially if you avoid any of the listed oils.
Do you need the whole kit?
No. Each serum and balm can be explored on its own product page. The Starter Kit brings the two serums and two balms together and offers Mini and Full Size choices. For exact contents and the current price of your selection, use the kit’s product page rather than judging size from a photograph.
Common questions
Are Synced Skin face serums water-based?
No. The current Synced Skin face serums use jojoba oil as their base. Read each product page’s ingredient overview and the complete ingredient declaration on its current packaging.
Is the balm vegan?
No. Synced Skin’s face balms contain tallow, an animal-derived ingredient. If you are looking for a vegan product, the balms are not a fit.
Which size is available?
Individual serums currently offer .5oz and 1oz options, and individual balms offer 1oz and 2oz options. Select the size on the product page; the selected option and current price, not a lifestyle image, determine what is added to your cart.
